  6. This file is an abridged chapter of "Internet: Getting Started," which
  7. is a document provided by SRI Network Information Systems Center that
  8. explains what the Internet is, different types of access, and access
  9. procedures.  The book also provides extensive background information
  10. about the Internet and lists several access providers.  This file is a
  11. list of those providers that offer services to places outside of the
  12. United States.  A companion file called
  13. Internet-access-providers-US.txt is also available on the host
  14. nisc.sri.com in the netinfo directory.
  15.
  16. If you offer such a service and would like to be listed in this file
  17. and in the book, or if you know of corrections or additions to this
  18. information, please send a message to nisc@nisc.sri.com.  Both
  19. the online and hardcopy versions of this information are updated
  20. frequently.

  27.                                       CHAPTER 7
  28.                                    NON-U.S. SITES
  29.
  30.                The  Internet,  having originated in the United States,
  31.                is not surprisingly strongest and most diverse in  that
  32.                country.      However,  the  Internet  is  a  worldwide
  33.                enterprise  and  there  are  many  networks   in   many
  34.                countries   that   are   full   and   active   Internet
  35.                participants.  Larry Landweber  of  the  University  of
  36.                Wisconsin  maintains  a  file  describing international
  37.                connectivity, that covers not only IP connectivity, but
  38.                BITNET,  UUCP,  FidoNet,  and OSI connectivity as well.
  39.                According to the April 10, 1992 version of  this  file,
  40.                there   are   107   entities  (mostly  countries)  with
  41.                international connectivity.  This file is  included  in
  42.                Appendix IX for your information.
  43.
  44.
  45.                This  section  describes some of these networks.  These
  46.                descriptions are provided so that if you are in one  of
  47.                these  countries  and  would  like  to  connect  to the
  48.                Internet, you can contact the resource listed for  your
  49.                country and get started.
  50.
  51.
  52.                However,  what  if  you  are  in  a country that is not
  53.                listed here?   How  would  you  go  about  joining  the
  54.                Internet?    This  can  be  a  challenge  if  there  is
  55.                currently no Internet presence  in  your  country,  but
  56.                here are some ideas about how to get started.
  57.
  58.
  59.                First,  determine whether the top-level domain for your
  60.                country  has  been  delegated  by   the   DDN   Network
  61.                Information  Center.  That is, does the DDN NIC list an
  62.                administrative contact for that domain?  You  can  find
  63.                this out by contacting the DDN NIC:
  64.
  65.                          Government Systems, Inc.
  66.                          Attn: Network Information Center
  67.                          14200 Park Meadow Drive
  68.                          Suite 200
  69.                          Chantilly, VA  22021
  70.                          800 365 3642
  71.                          +1 703 802 4535
  72.                          FAX: +1 703 802 8376
  73.                          hostmaster@nic.ddn.mil
  74.
  75.
  76.
  77.
  78.                If  the DDN NIC does list someone, contact that person.
  79.                He is probably knowledgeable about networking  in  your
  80.                country and can help you get started.  You will need to
  81.                register your domain name with him as well.
  82.
  83.
  84.                If your country's domain has not been delegated,  there
  85.                is  probably no connection to the Internet based on the
  86.                TCP/IP protocols.  However,   there  may  be  at  least
  87.                electronic  mail  access based on other protocols.  You
  88.                may wish to check books that have  lists  of  networks.
  89.                For  example,  !%@::  A  Directory  of  Electronic Mail
  90.                Addressing and Networks by Donnalyn Frey and Rick Adams
  91.                [1],  The  Matrix  by  John  Quarterman [2], and Users'
  92.                Directory of Computer Networks by Tracy LaQuey [4] have
  93.                network  listings  that  are  much  more extensive than
  94.                 those provided here.  In addition, there are  a  couple
  95.                of  newsletters  that  often  discuss the international
  96.                aspects of networking.  One  is  the  Internet  Society
  97.                News  [5],  whose  first  volume  was issued in January
  98.                1992; another is Matrix News  [6],  offered  by  Matrix
  99.                Information   and   Directory   Services,  Inc.    More
  100.                information about each  of  these  newsletters  can  be
  101.                found in Section 13.
  102.
  103.
  104.                If  you  can find no established networking presence in
  105.                your country, you will have to start  from  scratch  by
  106.                contacting  possible providers and seeing what they can
  107.                do for you.  Some good places to start are:
  108.
  109.                   - The commercial service  providers  listed  in
  110.                     Section  4.    As they are in the business of
  111.                     providing Internet connections, they are very
  112.                     motivated to help.  Some of them already have
  113.                     connections from the U.S. to other countries.
  114.                     These  particular  providers  are repeated in
  115.                     Section  7.17.    However,  some   of   their
  116.                     non-U.S.  connections  may  be due to special
  117.                     project   affiliations    or    some    other
  118.                     arrangement  that might make it difficult for
  119.                     these sites to help some  other  organization
  120.                     even  within  the  same  country  to join the
  121.                     Internet.
  122.
  123.                   - The NSF Network Service  Center  (NNSC)  (see
  124.                     Section   11.6.2).      The   NNSC   is  very
  125.                     knowledgeable  about   connections   to   the
  126.                     Internet  from  other  countries  and  can be
  127.                     helpful in suggesting contacts or strategies.
  128.
  129.                   - The   BITNET   Network   Information   Center
  130.                     (BITNIC)  (see  Section  11.6.4).    Although
  131.                     BITNET access is not full Internet access, it
  132.                     can  be used for electronic mail.  BITNET has
  133.                     a strong sister network in Europe called EARN
  134.                     (see Section 7.1.1.2).
  135.
  136.                   - In  Europe,  the  RIPE  Network  Coordination
  137.                     Center (NCC) supports the  network  providers
  138.                     in  the  member  countries.  They may know of
  139.                     some activity in IP networking in  your  area
  140.                     and be able to refer you to a local contact.
  141.
  142.                   - SRI Network Information Systems Center (NISC)
  143.                     cooperates in  collecting  information  about
  144.                     service  providers internationally and making
  145.                     such   information   available.      Whatever
  146.                     information  is known at the time of printing
  147.                     will  always  be  included  in   the   latest
  148.                     revision  of  this  document; however, during
  149.                     the   interims   between    printings,    new
  150.                     information  may  have  emerged that might be
  151.                     helpful.
  152.
  153.
  154.                The  following  sections  provide   information   about
  155.                specific countries.  We are grateful to the contacts in
  156.                these countries who have supplied this information  for
  157.                us.    If you are a provider of Internet access in your
  158.                country and do not see your  information  reflected  in
  159.                the  following sections, please feel free to send it to
  160.                us at SRI via the contact information provided  in  the
